Visit Šibenik

Today Šibenik is the administrative, political, economic, social and cultural center of a county which stretches along the 100 kilometer long belt between the Zadar and Split Rivieras, reaching up to 45 kilometers deep into the hinterland.

Šibenik is connected to the open sea by amazing St.Anthony's Channel. Entrance to the channel is guarded by St.Nicholas' Fortress, dating from Renaissance times, which together with three other City fortresses - St.Michael's, St.John's and Šubićevac, stands as a symbol of centuries-old continued resistance of Šibenik, and one of the three such fortifications in the Mediterranean.

The Šibenik region covers about 1,000 square kilometers and is composed of an island and a coastal region, and its hinterland. Wonderful Šibenik Archipelago consists of 242 islands, islets, reefs and cliffs with only ten settlements on the islands. The most known among them are Zlarin - island of coral divers, Krapanj - island of spongers, Prvić - residence of noblemen from Šibenik and islands of Kaprije, Zirje and Zlarin.

The rich cultural and historical heritage of the city is visible in the impressive Cathedral of St. Jacob (sv. Jakov), built by the famous architect Juraj Dalmatinac and is under UNESCO protection. In the same square as the cathedral is a Memorial to Juraj Dalmatinac, created by the greatest Croatian sculptor of the 20th century, Ivan Mestrovic. Together with Renaissance City Hall and surrounding churches, palaces and Rector's Palace, nowadays home of the County Museum, it makes one of the most beautiful squares in Croatian heritage of urban architecture.

Šibenik is a city of culture, the host to the only International Children's Festival as well as traditional events such as Dalmatian chanson Evenings and many others like Terraneo, Adriatic Boat show, etc.

Near the town there are two national parks - Krka and Kornati whose fascinating landscapes take visitors breath away. Krka is full of breathtaking scenery of waterfalls, flora, fauna as well as historical and archaeological remains. Kornati National Park is famous for its numerous islands and its undersea. Be sure to visit the Falcon Centre, only eight kilometres away from Šibenik, in a beautiful dense pine forest is a unique place where visitors can meet and learn about the life of falcons, and Etnoland Dalmati near the Krka National Park offers visitors the chance to learn through real life experience about the Dalmatian hinterland's past.

Beaches around Šibenik (Solaris, Žaborić, Grebaštica, Brodarica, Jadrija, Srima...) are extremely clean and fun. You must try the beach game of picigin, an invention of nearby city of Split's youth. All you need is shallow, sandy or not so stony beach, small ball and company. The aim is to hold a ball as much as you can up in the air, and you're allowed to use all body parts.

Walk through Kalelarga (officialy King Tomislav's street) and visit its shops, squares and cafes. Enjoy a cup of coffee or a drink in one of Šibenik's numerous cafes on the riva, or the beautiful and hidden St. Laurence's Medieval Monastery Garden.

Accommodation in Sibenik is mostly in hotels, mainly in Solaris hotel resort, but if you want to stay at the edge parts of town, it is easy to find some beautiful villa or apartment for rent.

Tourists can take rafting tours, or ski jet tours around islands in the archipelago. Boat excursions to national parks are very popular as well.

Šibenik is the city that has 24 churches, six monasteries, four fortresses, attractive "Four Water-Wells" not far from the Cathedral, 2851 stone City stairs, the largest number of Baroque organs, and Medieval Monastery Garden of St.Lawrence - the only one of a kind in Croatia.
