Sedation and anesthesia

Many years of experience have shown that while a series of procedures may not necessarily involve significant pain, they can still cause discomfort for the patient. Additionally, many patients avoid visiting the dentist due to fear. One way to alleviate discomfort and fear at the Dubravica Dental Center is through sedation or local anesthesia.

Local anesthesia is administered for any procedure that may cause even the slightest discomfort. Sedation is used exclusively for surgical procedures and plays a crucial role in making the perioperative period, along with the associated anesthesiological and surgical procedures, as comfortable as possible for patients.

The most common reasons for performing a procedure under sedation and local anesthesia include extensive and lengthy procedures, treatments for patients with severe dental anxiety, procedures for individuals with a strong gag reflex, as well as treatments for young children and people with special needs.

The type of anesthesia (local anesthesia or sedation) depends on the surgical procedure, the patient's overall health, any medications being taken, and the need for early postoperative rehabilitation. It is determined by the anesthesiologist in consultation with the surgeon and the patient.

Sedation

Sedation is used exclusively for surgical procedures and induces a state of calm and reduced awareness by administering medications that affect the central nervous system. This helps alleviate discomfort and fear, allowing the procedure to be performed while maintaining verbal communication with the patient throughout the entire duration (2–3 hours). Sedation is administered under the supervision of a specialist anesthesiologist. During the procedure, the heart and lungs are unaffected, and drowsiness typically subsides about 20 minutes after the procedure.

Local anesthesia

Local anesthesia is an essential aspect of modern dentistry, ensuring painlessness for the patient and allowing the dentist to work efficiently.

Anesthesia is administered for any procedure that may cause even the slightest pain, as well as for patients who experience anxiety. It remains localized to the anesthetized area, does not affect other parts of the body, has no lasting effects, and wears off after about two hours.
